The Dominion Country Club

Located just outside of San Antonio, the Dominion Country Club is an oasis for golfers of all skill levels. Its lush fairways and manicured greens provide a challenging yet accommodating experience. The skilled staff can offer helpful advice to help you improve your game and take your rounds to a higher level. Whether you’re looking for a regular haunt or a new adventure while visiting San Antonio, the Dominion Country Club is definitely worth considering.

Designed by Bill Johnston, Dominion Country Club is a sprawling, challenging layout set among the lush Hill Country surrounding Leon Creek. Ancient oaks line its fairways, while Leon Creek meanders through the course and its fast, undulating greens make it a stern test of golf.

The front nine may not be as difficult as the backside but still features plenty of challenges. Hole number two is reachable for an average tee shot of 180 yards, though you’ll need 300 yards to clear the creek that runs through it. On number seven, a deceptive slope towards the nearby creek must be avoided while the par 5 ninth hole has a drainage ditch to watch out for on the left and a pond protecting the green.

Things really heat up on the back nine Starting with number 16 – a 440-yard par 4 into the wind that has water right and trees left. This monster of a par 4 will leave you facing a colossal approach shot – if you’ve hit too far right off the tee, it may even be over water.

Finally, eighteenth hole is a daunting conclusion to the round. Playing significantly longer than 500 yards from the tips, this dogleg left plays uphill and often needs three full shots before you can safely make your way onto the green. Beware of the water both beside and behind the putting surface – place your ball poorly and you can kiss goodbye any hopes of wrapping up your round with a par!

Notable for its celebrity members – namely country music legend George Strait and NBA basketball star David Robinson – Dominion was once home to the PGA Senior Tour ‘s SBC tournament. When building the clubhouse, Ralph Bender spared no expense; with a generous $17m budget, he created one of the finest facilities in Texas. To get there, take I-10 west past Loop 1604 and exit at C.
